Science Project Burning nuts to find the energy?

I need to do a research paper for my science fair and im doing burning nuts to find the energy. When i burn what type of combustion is it? is it incomplete combustions? When i burn the nut why is it chemical energy and not thermal energy? I need topics to research on.
